Mixed Rice with Chestnuts

Picture from Muji's website

The Husband and I like the Japanese brand, Muji very much.

We buy things like furniture, clothes, shoes, kitchenware and even stationery from this shop. Muji also sells very yummy snacks and drinks.. and I have been buying those for years.

It is only recently, however, that I realised the Instant and Dried Food section of Muji is a godsend for working ladies.

A new find of mine is this packet of Chestnuts and Mixed Grains.

You simply empty the contents of the packet into a rice-cooker with rice and water and when the rice is done, you get a very delicious bowl of fragrant chestnuts with mixed grains. The mixed rice taste so good. All I had to do was cook a simple quick-boil soup and dinner was served.

Mixed Rice with Edamame

This dish is adapted from a quick and easy recipe from a friend. The original recipe was to mix cooked rice with a little sesame oil, edamame and pounded dried shrimps (or "heibihiam", as we'd call it in Singapore).

I added a Japanese twist to it by adding dried shredded scallop, shirasu and seaweed strips instead of the pounded dried shrimps.

Everything was mixed when the rice was piping hot. The result is a delicious bowl of mixed rice with the light perfume of dried seafood and the nutty flavour and texture of edamame.

We had this rice the other night with oden - my favourite dish during the rainy season.

Feeling under the weather

I've been feeling a little unwell recently.

Okay, maybe more than a little. It's been a while since I've been subject to the attack of such a strong flu virus.

I've been literally knocked out for the last 2 days - doing nothing much but sleeping. And I can't taste anything.. which is bad because.. well, everyone knows how much I like my food.

Since I couldn't taste much, I wanted to make my breakfast today look pretty. At least then I feel good eating it. So I decided to stack some yoghurt, granola, sliced almonds and dried strawberry slices into a pretty little glass with some golden honey at the bottom.

And you know what? Having a pretty looking breakfast did brighten up my day!
